The Gond, Korku and Baiga hills of the Satpura and Maikal

The upland forests of Chhindwara, Betul, Seoni, Balaghat, Mandla and Dindori: Gond, Korku and Baiga clans under their own chiefs, who give tribute to a king when he comes and pay nothing when he does not.

The Gond kingdoms of Garha-Mandla and Chanda are later; in 1200 the Gonds are known from the tradition and the campaign board. The Maikal range and the Narmada source at Amarkantak are their holy places.
