Chitral and Dir

The upper Kunar (Chitral) and the Panjkora (Dir) valleys are home to the Kho and Dardic peoples, with Kalasha and other communities, under local chiefs.

The Rais and Kator rulers of Chitral are of the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries (later). On 1 January 1200 we know of no named ruler, and the Ghurids of Peshawar and Kabul are the nearest settled power. Only the southern part of Chitral lies inside the sheet's frame.

How things stand that morning

The upper Kunar (Chitral) and the Panjkora (Dir) valleys are home to the Kho and Dardic peoples, with Kalasha and other communities, under local chiefs.

Where the sources disagree

  • The sheet frame ends at 35.5 N, so most of Chitral lies outside the frame.

On the map: A hand-drawn approximation clipped to the sheet.
