Varazze (Varagine)

A shipbuilding town (its name was read as 'the place where ships are launched'), with 12th-century walls.

From the 12th century it is a fief shared by the Aleramic marquises del Bosco and di Ponzone, who govern their coastal co-lordships from here; Savona and Genoa compete for it. A commune is attested only by 1256.
