Barga

A hill town of the lower Garfagnana, once a Lombard fief, which passed through the marquises of Tuscany under the Empire while keeping wide independence.

In the communal age it suffered repeated sieges by Lucca and Pisa (undated in our source). Its great church of San Cristoforo goes back before the year 1000; the town gates are Porta Manciana, Porta di Borgo and Porta Macchiaia.
