Arnstadt

An old place (named 704) on the Gera, Hersfeld's since the early 10th century, where Otto I held a diet in 954.

In the 12th century part of it fell to the counts of Käfernburg and it grew into a market settlement. Around 1200 the abbey holds the lordship, the coinage and the market and appoints the mayors. It is first called a town (civitas) in 1220 and receives town rights from Hersfeld only in 1266.
