Frontier town · Kingdom of Hungary · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Temesvár

The king's castle of the county of Temes, in the marshes of the Bega and the Temes.

The castle (castrum Temesiensis) is first named in 1212, a date some historians push to 1266; the county was probably formed in the twelfth century. In 1200 it is a county castle with its servants' villages, not a town. Its great days (Charles I's royal seat, 1316-1323) are far off.
