Bánmonostor

On the Syrmian bank of the Danube at the foot of the Fruška Gora.

Beloš, son of the Serbian župan Uroš I, Béla II's brother-in-law, ban and palatine who ruled Syrmia in the 1140s-1160s, founded a Benedictine monastery here in the twelfth century, hence 'the ban's monastery'. The castle of Kő stood by it. The bishopric of Syrmia set here in 1229 is later.
