Bars castle

An earth-and-timber county castle on the Garam (Hron) with a small settlement of castle folk: the centre of the royal county of Bars, but no town.

It governs no land of its own apart from the county the ispán rules from it. The great Benedictine abbey of Garamszentbenedek (Hronský Beňadik, founded 1075) stands upstream. The later county seat and town of Léva (Levice) with its castle are 13th-14th century.
