Csanád

The old Marosvár, Ajtony's seat on the lower Maros, taken for King Stephen by Csanád, who gave the county his name.

Stephen set Bishop Gerard here in 1030; Gerard's church and monastery of the Mother of God, and the see he founded, are the centre of the place, and the county castle stands beside them. It lies on the Maros where the salt from Transylvania passes downriver to Szeged and the Tisza. In 1200 it is a castle and bishop's seat with its settlement, not a chartered town.
