Frontier town · The kingdom of Pagan under Narapatisithu · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Nawnghkio gate

Where the road from the Irrawaddy up onto the Shan plateau crosses a deep limestone gorge: the one place on the eastern approach where a small force can hold a large one, and the campaign board's reason that Pagan's writ climbs the hill this far and no further.

The gorge of Gokteik with its natural bridge lies north of the gate. Nothing is dated.
