Chronicle · Pali (Jinakalamali, Chamadevivamsa) and Tai Yuan and Lao (the rest) · a primary source for the world of 1200

The later Tai, Lao and Mon chronicles of the north

There is no text of 1200 for the Mon kingdom of Haripunjaya, the Tai muang of Ngoenyang (Chiang Saen), Chiang Rung, the Yom and Nan valleys, or the Lao middle Mekong. What exists is later chronicle tradition. The Chamadevivamsa and Jinakalamali give the Haripunjaya king list and the wars with Lavo and the Khmer in the 11th and 12th centuries, naming the kings before the Tai conquest of 1292; the Chiang Mai Chronicle and the Chiang Saen tradition give the Lao (Lavachakkaraja) line of Ngoenyang, the ancestors of Mangrai (born 1239), which places his grandfather and father around 1200; the Nithan Khun Borom gives the Lao origin legend and the first muang. These lists are genealogy and myth, not record, and the names for 1200 are unverifiable. The Khmer inscriptions and the Pagan records are the only contemporary texts that touch these lands.
