Dagon (the Shwedagon hill)

A low hill above the eastern delta with a Mon village (Dagon) and a shrine that the legend makes 2,500 years old.

The earliest dated mention of the Shwedagon in the royal chronicles is 1362 or 1363, when Binnya U raised it to 18 m; repairs go back to 1436 on the Dhammazedi inscriptions; the hill is 51 m high (English Wikipedia, Shwedagon Pagoda). On 1 January 1200 there may be a small old stupa on the hill; no dated evidence of one exists. Yangon (Rangoon) is not yet a name.
