La Spezia (Spedia)

Not yet a town in 1200: a cluster of villages on the shore of the gulf (the Poggio) under the hill castle of Carpena, living from salt pans and coastal trade, first named in 1071.

It follows Carpena into Genoa's orbit in 1224, is sold to the Fieschi in 1252, and becomes a Genoese podesteria only in 1343.
