Solo mouth

Where the Bengawan Solo reaches the Java Sea: a shifting bar, a landing rather than a harbour, and the outlet for everything the longest river in Java carries down.

The bar moves and so does the landing; the mouth has moved over the centuries. In the Chinese list of Java's dependencies a name has been read as Sedayu (Hi-ning; from memory, not checked).

Where the sources disagree

  • Placement. The campaign board's point (6.9 S, 112.56 E) is the mouth of today's Bengawan Solo at Ujung Pangkah. The delta there was built after 1200 (and the lower river is said to have been re-cut to the cape in the 1890s; from memory, not rechecked), so the sheet's coast file draws that cape as sea and the river of 1200 reaches the sea in the bay behind it, near Sedayu. The point is moved to about 7.205 S, 112.60 E, the head of the 1200 bay. The exact line of the old channel is not known.

Evidence: A place the campaign board marks likely; no source of 1200 names it or its lord.
