Vico

The castle of Vico on its hill above the old courses of the Arno and the Serezza, where the waterways from Pisa and the sea to Florence met.

After Matilda's death (1115) it passed under the Pisan see; the commune took political control in 1161. The borghi outside the castle were being walled in the late twelfth and early thirteenth century; its twelfth-century pieve is built with Roman columns. In 1230 it becomes the seat of a Pisan captaincy.
