Pontedera

The bridge over the Era where the Pisan plain meets the Valdera; the first bridge (traced to 1099) was built by the Upezzinghi.

Listed among Pisa's castles in 1163, though its fortifications are first attested in the early thirteenth century. Here in 1172 Pisa threw back the coalition of Archbishop Christian of Mainz with Lucca, Siena, Pistoia and the Guidi. Florence and Lucca will destroy it in 1256.
