Port · Commune of Pisa · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Piombino

The port of Falesia below the headland facing Elba, grown round the abbey of San Giustiniano di Falesia (founded in 1022 by monks who were sons of Count Tedice, of the house later called della Gherardesca).

By the mid-twelfth century the abbey town had become a commune, and Pisa took control after the abbot ceded part of the monastery's property to the works of Pisa cathedral. It is Pisa's second port; its land gate tower is built in 1212.
