Port · Kingdom of Sicily under the regency · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Siponto

The old port-city of the Gargano coast and seat of an archbishop, in decline since the eleventh century as its harbour silted and the marshes round it bred malaria.

Its Romanesque church of Santa Maria was consecrated in 1117, and the abbey of San Leonardo stands outside the walls. It is still a town and a port in 1200: the earthquakes of 1223 and 1255 ruin it, and Manfredonia, founded by King Manfred in 1256 to replace it, does not yet exist.
