Ascoli Satriano

A hill town and bishopric on the southern edge of the Tavoliere, on the road from Benevento into Apulia.

It was here in 1190 that Count Roger of Andria, Tancred's rival, was trapped and taken by Tancred's brother-in-law Richard of Acerra and put to death (the chroniclers' account). Benjamin of Tudela, about 1165, found a small Jewish community.
