A small bishopric and port on the lagoon south of Siponto, the successor of Roman Salapia, with salt pans on the shore.
It is the chancellor Walter of Palear's town: he held fiefs at Salpi and nearby Tressanti, and after his defeat at Canne in October 1201 he and his brother Manerio found their first refuge in 'the faithful Salpi' (DBI).
Who holds it
- Name
- Not pinned; the chancellor Walter of Palear had fiefs at Salpi and Tressanti (dated only later)
- Title
- Lagoon port, salt works and bishopric
- Confidence
- low
Lord in 1200
Not pinned: the Federiciana says Walter of Palear 'still had power bases in his fiefs of Salpi and Tressanti' without dating them; the salt pans were a royal resource.
How things stand that morning
Not pinned for that winter; tied to the chancellor (his fief, date not pinned).
Where the sources disagree
Evidence: Federiciana (Palear) mentions the fiefs without a date; the DBI calls Salpi 'faithful' to him in 1201.
