Paterno

The castle town on the south-west slope of Etna above the Simeto, once the seat of Henry del Vasto, count of Paterno and Butera, leader of the Lombard settlers.

In 1197 the rebel army of Catania and its bishop was beaten here by Henry VI's men before Catania was taken and burned (Federiciana, Catania).
