Nardò

A town of the Salento grown round the abbey of Santa Maria di Nerito, a Greek (Basilian) house that passed to Latin Benedictines after the Norman conquest; the Norman count Geoffrey rebuilt its church in 1080.

Greek is still widely spoken in its countryside.

Not pinned. Nardò is not yet a bishopric (the abbey is raised to a see only in 1413). Matthew Gentile later holds fiefs near Nardò, and a Bernard Gentile is count of Nardò by 1220; neither is pinned for 1200.
