Port · Kingdom of Sicily under the regency · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Monopoli

The only port of note between Bari and Brindisi, a walled town and bishopric.

Monopoli stays loyal to Frederick II through his minority and resists rebel barons, and in July 1201 it and Taranto are the only Apulian places that hold out against Walter of Brienne. The romance of the pirate Maio of Monopoli, a documented figure, belongs to the early thirteenth century.
