Tripura

The hill kingdom of the Tripuri (Twipra) in the ranges between the Surma valley and the Chittagong plain, ruled by a Fa (king) of a clan that later takes Hindu forms and the Manikya title.

For 1200 the kingdom is real in the sense that the Tripuri hills have chiefs and a king; its Rajmala king list and its court are of later centuries. English Wikipedia lists Pattikera as the earlier polity, which is the plain below the hills (Samatata and Pattikera). The Ming Shilu "Da Gu-la" some link to Tripura is uncertain.

The Rajmala (a fifteenth-century chronicle written by the court pandits of Dharma Manikya I, r. 1431) gives a legendary line from Druhyu, son of Yayati, down through Trilochona and Daksina; the Manikya title starts only with Maha Manikya about 1400 (English Wikipedia). We do not use the Rajmala list for 1200.

English Wikipedia, Twipra Kingdom: the earliest historical records of the kingdom are of the fifteenth century; Rangamati on the Gomati becomes capital under Ratna Manikya I (about 1460). Capitals before that (Trivega on the Kapila, Khalangma on the Varavakra, Kailasahar near Sylhet in the eighth century) are legend.

What it holds

  • The Tripura hills and the Gomati valley
  • Claimed tribute from the plain at Pattikera and the Chittagong hills

Allies and rivals

The plain line at Pattikera (Samatata) to the west; Sylhet to the north; the Kuki-Chin hills to the east; Arakan to the south; the Senas to the west.

How things stand that morning

A hill king and his clan chiefs, not named in anything we opened.

Wealth

Hill rice, cotton, bamboo, gum, elephants and the tribute of the plain.

Military

Bowmen and elephant corps in the legend; no numbers.

Threats

  • Sena or Pattikera pressure on the plain
  • Bengal Turks after 1204, who reach the Meghna only later

What the year holds

What happened next, if nothing in play changes it. Each event carries what it depends on and what would stop it.

  1. about 1400 to 1460The Manikya title begins and the capital moves to Rangamati (Udaipur).Depends on: Later. Stopped by: Not applicable.

Places of note

  • Kailashahar: Site the Rajmala names for the early eastern capital (unverified).

Where the sources disagree

  • The brief says "Tripura lines". English Wikipedia places "Pattikera" only in the infobox as the earlier polity. We separate Pattikera (plain) from Tripura (hills).
  • The campaign board entry the-tripura-hill-frontier is "Sena of Bengal, contested"; no source shows the Senas ruling the hills.

Evidence: A fifteenth-century chronicle and nothing earlier.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.

On the map: The hills are drawn as the province Tripura: the hill kingdom of the Fa.
