Naga

The village-republic peoples of the hills between the Brahmaputra, the Chindwin and the Manipur valley.

The tribe names in use today (Angami, Ao, Lotha, Sema and others) are recorded long after 1200; the Ahom chronicles speak of "Naga" from 1228 onward. In 1200 the Naga are the traders in iron, dao steel, salt and cloth with the Kachari, Chutia and Kamarupa plains, the headhunting hill communities in each valley, and a wall between the valley kingdoms and Burma.

Where the sources disagree

  • The campaign board entry the-naga-hills is "contested" under Kamarupa; no source shows any plains king ruling Naga villages.

Evidence: No sources from 1200; written accounts begin with the Ahom chronicles.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.

On the map: The range is drawn as a province (the matching nie-prov record); this record draws no ground of its own.
