Chutia

The people of the upper Brahmaputra and the Lohit: later the Chutia kingdom of Sadhayapura (Sadiya), which English Wikipedia says was "believed to be founded in the early 13th century around Sadiya", before the Ahoms arrive in 1228.

It names no founder and says the Chutia ruler lists "cannot be traced to earlier than 19th century"; the earliest securely attested Chutia ruler is Nandin in the late fourteenth century. For 1 January 1200 there is a country of tribal chiefs and a Brahman shrine at Parasuram Kund, but no Chutia king.

English Wikipedia, Chutia kingdom.

What it holds

  • The Brahmaputra and its tributaries in eastern and northern Upper Assam and the Arunachal foothills (Burhi Dihing as the southern limit on later accounts)
  • Parasuram Kund on the Lohit (board)

Allies and rivals

The Kachari to the west (shared goddess Kechai Khati), Kamarupa (a half-forgotten overlord), the Naga hills to the south and the Ahoms, who arrive in 1228 and meet no Chutia resistance on Nath's account.

How things stand that morning

The country has local chiefs and a developing polity; "Chutia kingdom" is a name from after the game date.

Wealth

Gold-washing, salt, elephants, iron and the Tibet and Burma trails.

Military

Bowmen and elephants; no numbers.

Threats

  • The Ahom entry of 1228

What the year holds

What happened next, if nothing in play changes it. Each event carries what it depends on and what would stop it.

  1. 1228 to 1253Sukaphaa's Ahom migration enters the upper valley with, on one account, no Chutia resistance.Depends on: The Ahoms cross the Patkai. Stopped by: Not applicable.

Places of note

  • Sadiya: Sadhayapura.
  • Parasuram Kund: Pilgrim bathing place on the Lohit.

Where the sources disagree

  • The campaign board entry sadiya-country is "contested" under Kamarupa; English Wikipedia says the Chutia state emerged after the fall of Kamarupa, in the early thirteenth century. We draw it as peoples' ground.

Evidence: Chronicles of the nineteenth century and a plate of 1392; nothing from 1200.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.

On the map: The range is drawn as a province (the matching nie-prov record); this record draws no ground of its own.
