The Cicolano, the upper Salto valley south-east of Rieti, is kingdom ground since Roger II's annexation of 1143 and faces the papal city of Rieti and the Sabina.
The Mareri, a branch of the Berardi, take their name from the castle of Mareri by Petrella Salto; Philip of Mareri is remembered as the founder and his daughter Filippa, a child in 1200, will found the Clarissan house of Borgo San Pietro. The extent of the family's lordship in 1200 is not pinned; the rest of the Cicolano was held by other branches and lesser lords.
