Country, circuit or people · The kingdom of Pagan under Narapatisithu · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Upper Irrawaddy reach

The river reach above Pagan's rice country: a ferry and a few monasteries at Sagaing (the hill town is founded in 1315), the Myitnge mouth where the road down from the Shan plateau meets the river (Ava is built there in 1364), the long empty reach of Male where nothing else ties up for a day in either direction, and Tagaung, the old upper capital the chronicles make the origin of the Burmese kings.

Tagaung is the northern gate: all traffic from Yunnan and the Kachin hills passes it, and it is the last walled place before the empty reaches. The Mongols come this way in 1283 (board).

A quiet river road; the northern gate is Tagaung.

Places of note

  • Tagaung: Old walled upper capital.
  • Sagaing: Western landing.

Where the sources disagree

  • The campaign board entry has no Pinya, Sagaing hill town or Ava yet: agreed (1313 to 1315 and 1364).

Evidence: The campaign board entry and geography; no dated event.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.

On the map: Drawn on the modern river towns; the 1200 channel and landings are not known.
