In 1200 Zittau is not a town.
A Slav hamlet stood on the trade road over the Lusatian mountains to Česká Lípa, with a castle nearby; German colonists found the forest village of Sitte in the early thirteenth century (date not pinned). The place is first named in 1238 (the castle lords of Sitavia, the Ronovci brothers) and made a town by Ottokar II about 1255.
