Bautzen

Bautzen, the 'civitas Budusin' of 1002 and chief place of the Milceni, grew east of the Ortenburg at the Spree crossing of the Via Regia.

Under Bohemian rule since 1158, it has a market settlement below the castle and is a town by 1213 at the latest (some put its rights as early as 1157, given by degrees): its status on 1 January 1200 is a market town in the making.
