Görlitz, a Slav village given to the bishop of Meissen in 1071, has a castle (Yzhorelik) strengthened by Duke Soběslav I in 1126 and 1131 and a merchants' settlement round St Nicholas on the Via Regia from the mid-twelfth century.
About 1200 a planned town is laid out round the Untermarkt. A Bohemian royal officer resides there by 1234-1238; council and town rights come much later.
