Town · Duchy of Pomerania · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Prenzlau

Named first in 1187 and described in 1188 as a castle place with market, inn and church, and one of three Pomeranian mints.

A late Slav rampart stood west of the Ucker; a Slav settlement by St Sabine's and a second, partly German one by the later Franciscan house grew in the 12th century. Toward the end of the century the dukes called settlers from Lower Saxony into the land. Barnim I makes it a free town under German law in 1234.
