A family of German origin, settled in Friuli before 1077 and first seated at Lavariano, moved to the fortified place of Strassoldo on the low plain near Cervignano about the turn of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and took its name: Bernardus 'di Straso' is recorded in 1188 and Artuico 'de Strassho' in 1190.
They count among the free noble houses, often at odds with the patriarch; Strassoldo lay on the edge of the counts of Gorizia's fiefs and the family at times aided the counts against the church. In 1219 they are among the ten free houses that rebel against Patriarch Bertold and swear to Treviso.
