Caporiacco lies on the hills north-west of Udine, near the Mels castle (1026).
The castle's first mention is as late as 1292, when the Villalta asked Patriarch Raimondo della Torre for it after the family that held it died out; Patriarch Gregorio di Montelongo (1251-1269) had earlier destroyed it to punish Deltamo of Caporiacco. Whether the castle or the family existed on 1 January 1200 is not shown by these sources, so nothing is drawn.
