The lords of Duino hold the old castle above the sea at the mouth of the Timavo, where the road from Friuli to Trieste and Istria passes between the Karst and the Adriatic, with the abbey of San Giovanni al Timavo below.
Their lordship is attested at least by 1211, in the documents of the Peace of Timavo; a member of the family, Liutold, was bishop of Trieste in 1188. They were first vassals of the patriarch, then of the margrave of Istria, and finally captains for the counts of Gorizia, but the dates of those changes are not given.
