Communes · The kingdom of Pagan under Narapatisithu · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Port merchants of the Mon coast

The sea trade of Pagan runs through the delta and the peninsular ports.

Rice, forest produce, lac and silver go out and Indian cloth, Chinese ceramics, coral and pearls come in (Lieberman through English Wikipedia and the campaign board). The traders are Mon, Indian (Tamil and Bengali), Muslim (the Arabic use of martaban for a jar, the possible pathi origin of Pathein) and Chinese; the Ceylon fleet's raid of 1180 on Kusima shows the coast was known in Sinhalese ports. No quarter, headman or privilege is recorded: the entry stands for a real power that left almost no paper.

What it holds

  • Quays and warehouses of the delta ports
  • Dues paid to the king's governors (inferred)

How things stand that morning

Trading; nothing dated for 1200.

Places of note

  • Pathein quays: The western port.
  • Martaban: Mon, Muslim and Indian traders.
  • Dala: The eastern port.

Where the sources disagree

  • The campaign board entry bassein-pathein: 'Rice goes out, Indian cloth and Chinese ceramics come in': inference, plausible.

Evidence: Inference from trade goods, names and the raid of 1180; no document of 1200.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.
