Mu canals and Meiktila tank

Narapatisithu began canals to open the Mu valley north of Sagaing to wet rice; how far they had got by 1200 is not stated.

The Meiktila tank is a large embankment lake on the dry plateau between the Irrawaddy and the Sittaung (about 11 km by 0.8 km today, fed by the Mondai dam), credited by tradition to Anawrahta; no source we read dates it, so whether it is already there on 1 January 1200 is not pinned (it is likely to be older than the reign if the tradition is right). A modern list of Meiktila's pagodas attributes six to Narapatisithu and gives 1201 for one of them (Htee Thone Sint): a local attribution, not evidence.

Where the sources disagree

  • The campaign board entry meiktila-lake and mu-valley-canals: used; the tank's builder is tradition.
