Hazara and Pakhli

The district of Abbottabad and Mansehra, the ancient Urasa and Pakhli, was counted among the dependencies of Kashmir in the Rajatarangini (to 1149).

Between the Ghaznavid fall and the Mughals it is poorly recorded. We could find no source for its ruler on 1 January 1200: it lies between the Ghurid Punjab and the Peshawar plain on one side and the Kashmir of Jagadeva on the other. It is drawn as contested ground, because no power is shown to hold it: the Ghurids of Peshawar and the Punjab and the Kashmir of Jagadeva both reach it and neither is attested there.

The colour says that nobody can be named, not that the hills are empty.

How things stand that morning

Ruler not known. Drawn as contested ground: the Ghurid Punjab and Peshawar plain lie to the west and south, the Kashmir of Jagadeva to the east.

Where the sources disagree

  • The first draft coloured this country Ghurid as a placeholder. The GM rule is contested (or peoples) where no ruler is found, so the colour is changed to contested and the anchors for Abbottabad and Mansehra follow. Nothing in the sources read puts a Ghurid officer here in 1199 to 1200.

Evidence: No source for the decade.

On the map: A hand-drawn approximation.
