Lugo

The bishop of Lugo has been lord of his walled Roman city since Alfonso VI granted the see the lordship of Lugo in 1088.

He rules the town inside the great walls, with the cathedral begun in 1129 by Master Raimundo, and the townsmen's council lives under his officers. The burghers' long struggle against the bishops breaks into open revolt only in the next century (1312).

Who holds it

Name
Rodrigo Menéndez (Rodrigo II)
Title
Bishop of Lugo
Since
1182
Confidence
high

Bishop from 1182 to 1218, following a namesake who held the see for a year. A suffragan of Braga, which matters as León and Portugal quarrel.

What it holds

  • Lugo: city lordship inside the Roman walls, with courts and officers (granted 1088)
  • Episcopal lands and churches in the surrounding district (not pinned for 1200)

How it was acquired

Grant of the lordship of the city by Alfonso VI in 1088.

How things stand that morning

Held by the bishop.

Wealth

Rents and justice of the city; the road from León to Santiago and the coast; a large inland diocese.

Threats

  • Townsmen's resistance to the bishop's officers
  • The papal sanctions on León over the king's marriage

Advocates and rivals

The townsmen and their council; the Galician nobility; the archbishop of Braga as metropolitan, against Santiago's ambitions.

Places of note

  • Cathedral of Lugo: Romanesque cathedral begun in 1129

Where the sources disagree

Evidence: The 1088 grant and the bishop list are clear; little is known of Lugo's politics in 1200.

On the map: A disc round the city, since the modern municipality of Lugo covers a wide rural area whose lordship in 1200 is not pinned.
