The archbishop's history of the peninsula, written forty years on by a Navarrese who served Castile. Its books on Alfonso VIII cover the loss at Alarcos, the Navarrese war and the fall of Vitoria in 1200, Sancho VII's dealings with the Almohads, the Castile and Leon quarrel and the marriage of Berenguela, Peter II's accession in Aragon, and Sancho I's Portugal, before the long build-up to Las Navas. Rodrigo knew the courts and the Arabic sources, but he shapes everything toward Toledo's primacy and Castile's lead.
