Valença (Contrasta)

Sancho I founded a walled town here 'about 1200' and named it Contrasta because it faced the Galician city of Tui across the Minho; the Leonese later razed it.

Whether work had begun by 1 January 1200 is not pinned. The ground opposite Tui is Portuguese.
