Somnath

Prabhas Patan, on the south Saurashtra coast, holds the great Shaiva temple of Somnath, sacked by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1025 to 1026 and rebuilt by Kumarapala of Gujarat in 1169 (recalled; see Somnath temple).

Beside it the harbour of Veraval ties the temple to the horse trade with Hormuz. The temple lands, the pilgrims and the harbour tolls are the revenue; the priests (Pashupata and Brahmin) are a power in their own right.

How things stand that morning

A temple city with its harbour; no source we reached describes a threat to it in 1200.

Communities

Brahmin and Shaiva priests; Muslim merchants of Hormuz (an inscription of 1264 at Veraval records a mosque for a Hormuz shipowner: recalled, not rechecked; later than 1200).

Trade and crafts

Pilgrim dues; the harbour of Veraval; salt and fish.
