Santarém

The fortress-city on its bluff over the Tagus, taken by surprise on 15 March 1147.

It is the granary of the kingdom, ruling the rich flood plains of the river, and the bulwark of the Tagus line: the caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf died of a wound received before it in 1184, and al-Mansur besieged it and gave up in 1190.
