Town · Landgraviate of Thuringia · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Melsungen

A small castle (burgus) at the Fulda crossing built by Henry Raspe II as advocate of Hersfeld.

Archbishop Conrad of Mainz bought castle and town from the landgraves in 1189-90 and gave the town its rights; in a Mainz-Thuringian feud of 1193-94 both were destroyed, and the landgraves rebuilt them as their own.
