South of Phetchaburi the Gulf coast runs down a narrow strip of low beach ridge and rice flats under the Tenasserim range, past Cha-am, Hua Hin, Pran Buri, Kui Buri, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Bang Saphan to the isthmus.
It is thin ground: Mon, Malay and Karen fishers and traders, forest goods coming down from the range, and the old trans-isthmus portage routes at its southern end (the Island Southeast Asia map's). The Khmer seat at Phetchaburi is the last listed town north of it. Nothing is attested for 1200.
