Kachin hills

The high ranges east of the Irrawaddy and the Mali and N'Mai rivers, from the hills behind Bhamo to the Triangle.

English Wikipedia (Kachin people) puts the Jingpo's entry into Burma anywhere from about 100 CE to the seventeenth century and does not settle it, and says other peoples (the Maru, Lashi, Azi, Rawang and Lisu) were already at the meeting of the Chyai and Mali rivers; the page does not mention Pagan at all. So the campaign board's 'Kachin hills' are, for 1200, hill country of several peoples with the Jingpo present or not yet. The page's three zones (valley rice farmers, hillside cultivators who depend on Shan rice, mountain people who tax caravans) are undated.

Pagan's claim runs to Myitkyina on paper and nobody collects anything there (board). Nanzhao influence on the hills in the eighth and ninth centuries is the only dated contact.

How things stand that morning

Hill peoples under their own headmen; Pagan's claim is paper.

Places of note

  • Myitkyina reach: Head of navigation; the modern town is later.

Where the sources disagree

  • The campaign board entry myitkyina-reach: the Irrawaddy's head of navigation at 25.383, 97.40; 'the town of the name is modern'. The Jingpo timing is not settled: the campaign board's Kachin hills may be Maru, Lashi, Atsi, Rawang and Lisu country in 1200.

Evidence: A modern page that gives conflicting migration dates; no dated record of 1200.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.

On the map: The outline follows the high hills east of the Irrawaddy; the far east is the Chinese border.
