The Lawkananda

Built on the bank of the Irrawaddy in Anawrahta's reign; the page gives no year and says the pagoda holds a replica of a Buddha tooth relic.

The campaign board gives 1059 and calls the place the royal landing where the boats from the delta tie up and where monks arriving from Ceylon by way of Bassein come ashore. That the landing worked as a landing in 1200 is the campaign board's reading; the page says nothing of it. The page's coordinates (21.1272, 94.8506) put it on the river bank south of the old city; the campaign board's coordinates are about 2 km east-north-east of that, inland of the river.

Where the sources disagree

  • The campaign board entry lawkananda-landing at 21.135, 94.869; the pagoda page gives 21.1272, 94.8506. The page's figure is used for the religious record; the town record Lawkananda follows it too.

Evidence: The campaign board entry and a short page; no inscription and no keeper.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.
