Ventimiglia is the cathedral city at the mouth of the Roya, the gate between Genoa's Riviera and Provence.
Genoa took it by land and sea in 1139 and in 1146 forced the counts and the new commune to accept Genoa as feudal overlord; the city rebelled more than once and Genoa will besiege and take it in 1218-1222. In 1185 Count Ottone III offered to swear to the commune's sworn association. On 1 January 1200 the commune governs the town and the lower Roya and Nervia under Genoese overlordship.
