Bishop's city on the Bormida with hot springs and a small contado, attested as a commune from 1135.
Alessandria, founded in 1168, tried to take its bishopric with Alexander III's backing, and the two cities have clashed ever since. On 12 June 1198 Acqui allied with Boniface of Montferrat; under a pact of June 1199 his son William was to serve with twenty knights against the Alessandrini (DBI on William VI).
