Frontier town · Margraviate of Brandenburg · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Spandau

A castle place at the mouth of the Spree, not yet a town.

Albert the Bear took over the Slav castle in 1157; the new Ascanian castle north of old Spandau is probably meant when Everard is named Vogt there in 1197. Round 1200 the suburb's people were probably being moved to the later old town, where a church of St Moritz may have stood. First called a town in the margraves' charter of 7 March 1232.
